DOM (Dissolved Organic Matter)

The dissolved fraction of natural and anthropogenic organic carbon, measured by UV-induced fluorescence.

DOM, sometimes reported as fDOM or CDOM, captures the humic, fulvic, and other dissolved organic compounds that color natural waters and react with disinfectants to form disinfection by-products (DBPs). Fluorescence-based DOM sensors give a fast, continuous proxy for dissolved organic carbon and a leading indicator of watershed runoff events, leaf-litter leaching, or wastewater impact.
