pH
The acid-base balance of water, expressed on a logarithmic 0 to 14 scale.
pH influences nearly every chemical and biological process in water: metal solubility, ammonia toxicity, disinfection efficiency, and the comfort range of aquatic life. Because it is a logarithmic measure, a change from pH 7 to pH 8 represents a tenfold drop in hydrogen-ion activity. Continuous pH monitoring captures the diel swings driven by photosynthesis and respiration that grab samples almost always miss.
