Turbidity

The cloudiness of water caused by suspended particles, measured optically by light scattering.

Turbidity is the most widely regulated optical water-quality parameter. It tracks erosion, runoff events, algal growth, dredging impact, and treatment-process performance, and it is the workhorse compliance metric for drinking water filtration. Modern nephelometers measure 90° scattered light from an infrared or white-light source per ISO 7027 / EPA 180.1, providing a stable, calibration-traceable signal.
