How AquaRealTime Is Engineering Safer Waterways

battling cyanobacteria blooms

Fresh, clean water is a precious and finite resource. Yet, keeping lakes, rivers, and other waterways free and clear of harmful algae blooms (HABs) is a constant battle — one where technological innovation is a critical ally.

AquaRealTime is proud to be on the front lines of HAB detection and mitigation. Our AlgaeTracker is specifically built to empower stakeholders with real-time data that minimizes the potential of HABs, to keep waterways safe. Our solution isn’t just another data collection device; it integrates seamlessly with treatment company processes and is engineered for rapid detection, swift action, and peace of mind.

The power of real-time water monitoring

At its core, the AlgaeTracker is an IoT device that monitors water quality, focusing on harmful algae blooms and related events. From recreational lake management to large-scale drinking water utilities, it provides critical insights to ensure water safety. "Our device helps stakeholders make informed decisions by expanding capabilities to track [critical] signals," says Yuanming Chen, AquaRealTime’s Software Architect.

The foundation of AlgaeTracker’s efficacy is in its timeliness. The device samples water every 30 minutes using advanced optical technologies and third-party data sources. This data is then transmitted to a powerful cloud engine, where it is analyzed. “We ensure that if adverse events are detected, stakeholders are alerted immediately so they can take appropriate action,” Chen explains. This seamless integration of hardware and software is key to empowering users with proactive decision-making in aqueous environments sensitive to HAB activity.

But while AlgaeTracker makes it look easy, water monitoring is no small feat — especially when devices need to withstand varied and often extreme conditions. AquaRealTime’s trackers are designed to be robust and reliable. “Because these devices are deployed in lakes, coastlines, and waterways across the world, they need to work in any condition,” says Chen. “We’ve built a distributed and reliable system to make that possible.”

Collaboration is a driving force behind innovation

Safeguarding waterways against HAB activity is a collaborative endeavor — no matter where it takes place. As such, customer feedback plays a pivotal role in shaping the next evolution of AquaRealTime’s technology. “Initially, we focused on monitoring water quality around utilities,” Chen notes. “Today, we go where the customer wants us to go and solve the problems they need us to solve.”

Each new partnership and deployment pave the way to AlgaeTracker innovation, such as the addition of pH, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen monitoring capabilities. By listening to customer needs, AquaRealTime continues to refine detection technologies, to deliver solutions that cater to diverse applications.

There’s more to engineering innovation than features and capabilities, too. One of AquaRealTime’s standout achievements is offering high-performing devices at a lower cost compared to competitors. “Our white papers demonstrate that our devices can deliver the same — if not better — performance than much more expensive alternatives,” says Chen. This cost efficiency makes advanced water monitoring accessible to more organizations, ensuring broader adoption and impact, and continued opportunities to improve AlgaeTracker technology.

Continuous focus on product improvement

Looking ahead, AquaRealTime is focused on two primary areas of innovation: expanding signal monitoring capabilities and enhancing device reliability. “We want to track more signals, like we’ve done in the past with pH and oxygen levels, and make our devices smaller, more robust, and self-maintaining,” explains Chen.

Flexibility is another priority. Chen emphasizes the importance of creating a hardware and software platform that can adapt to various customer needs while maintaining affordability. “Different customers have different needs, and our challenge is to provide that flexibility.”

For Chen, AquaRealTime’s mission aligns perfectly with his background in software and hardware integration. With a background in electrical engineering and experience developing 3D simulation tools, he brings a unique perspective to environmental technology. “We want to take real signals from water and convert them into actionable insights that can help people treat and manage waterways.”

Engineering a safer future for waterways

AlgaeTracker and its evolving suite of technologies represent a commitment to proactive water management. By combining robust engineering with customer-driven innovation, AquaRealTime seeks to make a continued impact where HABs are a threat. With a commitment to collaboration and continued engineering excellence, AlgaeTracker will be indispensable in safeguarding one of our planet’s most vital resources today, tomorrow, and beyond.
